He is the demigod son of Hades and mortal Maria di Angelo. As such, Nico has extraordinary powers of necrokinesis and the power to command the dead; he is a son of one of the "Big Three" Greek gods, the other two being Hades's brothers Poseidon and Zeus. This makes his powers superior to those of demigods not fathered by the "Big Three". Nico is chronologically over seventy years old as a result of his prolonged stay in the Lotus Casino in Las Vegas, an enchanted hotel where one does not age and time does not pass at its normal pace. Nico is said to have shaggy, messy black hair, olive-like skin and brown eyes. He usually has on dark clothing and he is also mentioned on several occasions to be wearing an aviator's jacket.

since Nico is the son of Hades, he finds it very easy to make enemies. He has had such a troubled past, that he doesn't know who he can and can not trust anymore. Nico also has a fatal flaw of holding grudges against people, which can create enemies. Nico has a very short temper as well. Even the smallest of things that may annoy him can set him off. However, not everyone that Nico meets becomes one of his enemies.
